The Discover Downtown Partnership sponsored a series of four Community Visioning Sessions for the purpose of developing a clear community vision for the future of Downtown Johnstown. These sessions were open community forums conducted by the PA Downtown Center (PDC) (padowntown.org). This was an opportunity for the community to come together and create a clear vision for Downtown Johnstown for the next five to ten years.
Public support was terrific! We averaged approximately 105 participants per session and the conversations were lively and productive. It was encouraging to see such a wonderful combination of city leaders, businesspeople, residents, and enthusiasts engage in this great community conversation. At our fourth and final session (held Monday, February 26th) we adopted the final version of our Vision Statement for Downtown Johnstown.
We're keenly aware that we must maintain the momentum we've begun as a community. With our vision statement in hand we have now begun completing our application to enter the Main Street Program. The application will take several months to complete. Our current target to submit the application is July 1, 2007. The Main Street Program provides guidance and financial support to help our community build a five-year action plan, hire a Main Street Manager, and put specific steps, budgets, and time frames to achieving our vision. We're hopeful that the many volunteers who've helped us fashion this community vision will join us as committee volunteers as we work to complete our application and make the vision a reality.
